BLACKWATER VALLEY U3A

ACTIVITIES

Meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month at the Hawley Memorial Hall, Blackwater from 2:00pm to 3:30pm (doors open 1.30pm). We make a nominal 50p entrance fee to cover our costs including tea and biscuits after the proceedings.

We have arranged an interesting mix of speakers for this year as shown below. Further details will be posted here and in the Newsletters when available.

The 2009 Programme:

Here is a reminder of the 2009 Programme

  • 15 January - Mr Geoff Lunn with a talk entitled “Surrey Safari” illustrated with photographs of local wildlife in Surrey, around Sands and Seale villages. Other places which he had visited for his photographic journey were Crooksbury Hill, Ash Common, Cutmill and Frensham ponds.
  • 19 February - Major Paul Whittle with a talk entitled “China Beyond the Great Wall” including highlights of a 2,000 mile journey from bustling Beijing, the amazing  Terracotta Army at Xian, and northern China to  the remote and bleak mountainous Jing Peng region of Inner Mongolia.
  • 19 March - Dr Diana Samways with a talk entitled “I’m a patient - get me out of here” with facts relating to common health problems and providing helpful information on how to overcome them. This talk will be preceded by our Annual General Meeting, when you will be invited to elect your committee for the coming year. Anyone interested in joining the committee should contact Chris Bowen.
  • 16 April Kenneth Exworth B.E.M who is a retired Metropolitan Police Office with a talk entitled “The Experiences of a Metropolitan Police Officer” including some of the amusing experiences that occurred during his varied career.
  • 21 May - Christine Brewster will tell us about Basket Making using traditional techniques and contemporary designs
  • 18 June - Lance Pierson, freelance actor, writer, speaker and trainer presents “The Poems we were brought up on”
  • 16 July - “The History of Punch and Judy” by Alix Booth who has worked with Mr Punch for over 30 years and is an Associate Member of the Punch and Judy Fellowship. Her talk will be given through the medium of the puppets including all the traditional figures. See her website at: www.alixpartypuppets.co.uk/partypuppets.html
  • 20 August - Garden Party. Kindly hosted by Blanche at 17 Green Lane, Blackwater.  Please bring a small plate of summer food to share and a chair to sit on. Alcoholic and non-alcoholic punch will be provided and there will be a raffle. In the event of bad weather on the day, please phone any member of the committee as shown on the Contacts page after 11:00 for confirmation of venue
  • 17 September - Christopher Fifield,  conductor and writer on music history with a talk entitled “The Life and Voice of Kathleen Ferrier”.  Fifty years ago, Kathleen Ferrier, the greatest lyric contralto Britain has ever produced, lost her courageous battle with breast cancer. Until now she has been a glorious voice, but the real person is revealed through her fascinating letters and diaries. For more information on Christoper Fifield see:

  • 15 October - Heather Hook presents “Aerial Photography” with a selection of stunning photographs taken all over the world, while she “hung out” of helicopters and small planes.
  • 19 November - Ken Crick, Chairman of Moor Green Lakes Group will tell us about “Dragonflies and their Habitats in the Blackwater Valley. See the BVCT Website at: http://www.bvct.org.uk/node/28 for more on this
  • 17 December - Christmas Party
                
    Please bring a smallplate of festive food - Punch will be provided.
               There will be a special raffle and displays of Line Dancing and
               Arts and  Crafts.
               Group Leaders are invited to bring along any photographs or
               other exhibits which illustrate what their groups have been
               doing during the year.

To find The Hawley Memorial Hall, turn off A30 on B3272 Hawley Road. After ˝ mile turn right at the traffic lights into Fernhill Road.  After 100 yards turn right into the Memorial Hall. The U3A meets in the older hall at the end of the road and there is an extensive car park is behind the hall.
